A new treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men who have taken vardenafil is under review. A pharmacist from the NHS has been urged to take a drug review at the earliest possible opportunity, with the launch of Levitra a new option. The launch comes a day after a study from the Urology Clinic in Manchester found that Levitra is not as effective as previously prescribed medicines. The study, carried out by the NHS, is the first to examine the effectiveness of this new treatment.
The launch was made possible thanks to a pharmacist's agreement with Pfizer, which will supply Levitra to the NHS at a cost of £5.8 million each. The medication, which will cost £2.4 million, will be priced at £10.9 million compared with £2.5 million for the standard treatment.
Dr Nick Gudriott, the chief executive of the NHS, said: "The launch of this treatment is an important milestone in the ongoing fight to tackle the challenge of ED and we are delighted to see the NHS leading pharmacist on the launch of this treatment available to the public."
The launch of Levitra has been hailed as a step in the right direction for patients, which includes those on the low-cost generic drug Viagra. The drug, which was originally to be licensed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men, has been available on the NHS since 1998.
In a statement the pharmacist said: "The launch of Levitra is a major milestone for patients as we look forward to helping to ensure that this treatment is well-tolerated and effective.
"This is not the first time that a new treatment for erectile dysfunction has been launched. Last month, the NHS announced that a new treatment for erectile dysfunction, called 'Vardenafil', had been launched, which should be available to men aged 18 years and over starting November 11, 1998.
Vardenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor, which relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow to the penis. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis following sexual stimulation.
"In order to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, patients need to be able to achieve and maintain an erection long enough for sexual intercourse."
The new treatment works by blocking the action of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). This prevents the breakdown of cGMP, which relaxes the smooth muscle cells of the penis, thereby increasing blood flow.
The erectile dysfunction treatment will be available to the public at cost of £5.8 million compared with £2.5 million for the standard treatment.
The NHS said Levitra is the first medication to be launched for ED in the UK, with a long list of other medications available including Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
